My poor Sammy relapsed with a terrible fever again this past weekend, and rather than make him suffer through who knows how many more hospitalizations we put him to sleep yesterday.
I already miss him.

I’ve been in a strange zen-like state that I call busy…yet not-busy. I’m working part-time for the old job, which is neat because I get to keep my health benefits and make a little money while I’m job searching. It’s also neat because I do as much or as little as I want. I’ve only been doing an hour or two a day, because I’m enjoying my time off so much. Once a day I try to get a least one thing put away properly. Everything’s been unpacked for a while now, but some of it we just threw in a corner till it could be properly organized. Once a week I make myself go out and do something productive to get myself on the way towards being an Austin resident. Two weeks ago Dane and I got library cards, last week it was the emissions inspection for the car, and this week I plan to get to the tax office to pay for my tags and registration. Next week I’ll make the dreaded trip to the DMV for my license.
That’s the busy portion of my days. The not-busy involves me consuming as much media as possible. I’ve already watched all current episodes of Rome, and have started burning through the Netflix queue. I’m catching up on my reading, and my gaming. It’s glorious.
Oh, I promised pictures. Well, I regret that I don’t have any of the city yet, but here’s one of my office:

And here’s my current office neighbor:

Oh yeah, I’m working so hard.

The vet gave my kitten a clean bill of health, except for some intestinal bugs and some fleas. A quick deworming and flea bath later and she’s quite happy. The boys are beside themselves at the moment. I expect Rex will warm up to her first, as he’s already been trying to sniff her a bit. Sam merely follows her around and growls, slapping at her whenever he thinks I won’t bonk him on the nose for it. She stays in the bathroom when I’m not around so she doesn’t become a snack. When I am around she trundles around the apartment and falls down a lot. It’s all very cute, and I imagine there will be millions of pictures forthcoming this weekend when I have some time to sit around the apartment. I’ve also been looking around for a good name.

On the way in the door to work this morning I heard something that sounded like a mewling kitten. I went to investigate with a coworker, and sure enough we found a tiny kitten hiding in the undercarriage of a truck in the neighboring parking lot. We managed to coax her out with some canned tuna, and she’s currently resting comfortably in an empty office. She goes to the vet with me after work this evening. Once she’s given a clean bill of health I’ll probably take her home and introduce her to Sam and Rex. I’m undecided on what to do: I already have two cats, and don’t want them to be crowded and uncomfortable with apartment living, but she’s just so darn cute. I suppose we’ll see if Sam can abide having another cat around.

Zoe escaped from me last Thursday through a front door left open a fraction longer than it should have been. She appeared to be sleeping soundly at the other end of the room, but I looked away for a second and like some crazy ninja cat she was out the door. James and I chased her around the parking lot for a few minutes but she eventually escaped. Daniel mentioned that she had a penchant for disappearing for long stretches of time, so I’m still hoping she’ll come back. I guess I’ll just keep on the lookout.

My new temporary roommate, Zoe. She’ll be staying with me until Daniel finds an apartment in Seattle. So far Sam and Rex seem to be taking it much better than Zoe is. The boys have been mainly watching her slink around the apartment and leaving her alone. Hopefully she’ll settle in within the next few days.

Here’s a two for one: Friday catblogging AND my first picture of a finished object. This is Rex modeling the scarf that I knitted as a Christmas gift for my grandmother. I’m going to start taking pictures of all my finished projects from now on.

I’m dragging the cats to their yearly vet visit after work today. Now, transporting them ANYWHERE takes some planning ahead. Rex is absolutely terrified of the kitty carrier. I think it has something to do with his irrational fear of being outside, which I attribute to the fact that he was found behind a dumpster as a kitten. I also didn’t adopt him until he was around four months old, so I was unsuccessful in taming some of that skittishness. He still runs away from me and hides under the bed occasionally. In any case, whenever I bring out the carrier he will disappear for several hours, and it’s pratically impossible to extricate him from his hiding place without pulling a muscle or two. So I have to bring the carrier inside at least a day ahead of time and just let it sit there. Eventually he is lulled into a false sense of security, so that he doesn’t freak out when I close the bedroom door and come chasing after him the next day. At least, not until I try and put him in the box.
Sam, on the other hand, LOVES the carrier. As soon as I bring it inside he will sit in it for hours at a time. Apparently he likes going to new places, because that means he has new things to sniff. He even seems to like riding in the car. The only place he’s a pain is when we’re actually at the vet. He’ll hiss and growl at the poor lady until she’s done, then slink back into the box.
The end results of a vet visit: two grumpy cats and a shirt full of nervous kitty sheddings. Well, at least they’ll be healthy grumpy cats.
