I found this little gem on Wikipedia when googling “OOC” yesterday. I just got the first book from the library and between finding out that the author went to BYU and this I’m a little frightened to start reading it.

Say what you will about the Twilight series, but I have to say I’m impressed.
I mean, the author got what is essentially a self-insertion fanfiction PUBLISHED. And TONS of people are buying it.
Plus: the vampires are sparkly. SPARKLY! Like an overzealous raver with glitter or something! Bram Stoker is surely doing cartwheels in his grave.
I don’t really get embarrassed by what I like nowadays. Everything has it’s place. Yes, I can and do enjoy expensive chianti. But sometimes…I just want that Arbor Mist Blackberry Merlot. In the same way, I won’t pretend that Twilight is a masterpiece of fiction, but it was entertaining and reads really fast. It’s my equivalent of taking a romance novel to the beach for a summer read. Only this romance novel has vampires. And werewolves. And the most irritating and snotty teenage girl you will ever read about.
And I would have missed the sheer brilliance and hilarity that is sparklepires if I hadn’t read it.
I am eagerly awaiting the rest of the books from the library. I am confident that they will contain even more lulz and post fodder.

I tend to get a little obsessive over hobbies from time to time, but when it comes to knitting I find that that much less likely (comparatively). However, I did spend at least five minutes squinting at Lyra’s hat during the Golden Compass on Friday trying to determine how it was made while essentially ignoring the dialog. Once I did determine the method of its making, I promptly decided I would like to make one like it in the future.
I searched for a bit but wasn’t able to find a picture that shows it well. Unfortunately this is the best I could find. It’s made with an impossibly bulky yarn on needles that could probably double as table legs, and it’s pointy in the back like an elf hat or something.
On a related note the movie was ok, but felt a bit rushed. I imagine the sheer amount of material they had to cover had something to do with that. I do look forward to the other movies more, as the first book is mainly a setup for the rest of the story.

Since Dane is out of town for RAGBRAI I decided to forgo the madness of the bookstore at midnight and instead ordered my copy of Deathly Hallows from Amazon. I started reading it Saturday evening and devoted most of Sunday to finishing it. Couple of thoughts below the cut (WARNING! SPOILERS!):

I finally picked up a REAL BOOK this week. I haven’t read anything besides comic books and game manuals for a year or so, oddly enough, so what better to get me back into reading than a Terry Goodkind book?
I love the Sword of Truth series. I know a lot of people stopped reading his stuff after the second or third book. If you are one of those people and you enjoyed the first book, I suggest you read Chainfire. The style is more like that of the first book, and some pretty unexpected stuff happens. This is supposedly the first in three books that will wrap up the series.
