Oh, Russell

The Master

You are just so, so over the top. I don’t even care that half of your stuff doesn’t make any sense. Don’t ever change.

Things I have learned from Scribblenauts

In a fight between a vampire and a minotaur, the vampire will win.

Portals don’t give you a convenient shortcut from place to place like you may think. Instead, they are a gateway beyond the edge of madness that bring aliens, flan, and other various horrible creatures to our dimension to feast on your flesh.

If a kitty is stuck in a tree you only need a fireman to show up. The cat will vacate the tree on its own as soon as the fireman is on site.

new phone GET

This weekend I finally retired the trusty Samsung T609 I’ve had for over three years and jumped headfirst into smart phone territory with the Motorola CLIQ. I was originally looking at the G1 (and I still like the keyboard a bit better) but went with the CLIQ mostly because the system memory is larger and, well, it’s newer so I’m hoping it’ll be a while before it’s obsolete.

I have to say, I am extremely impressed with the CLIQ so far. The big draw is their custom Android build/service/skin thingie, Blur. Essentially it just syncs up all of your social networking crap with your phone book. So when I’m looking at a contact I can see their phone number, birthday, and email address, along with their latest Twitter or Facebook updates. There’s also a “universal inbox” that aggregates all of your email, texts, and PMs from the aforementioned social networking sites, and a “happenings” widget that aggregates all of your friends’ stuff. As Dane has said it can make you feel a bit TOO connected at times, but as long as you don’t obsess it’s a neat feature.

Other cool bits: it has five virtual desktops so you don’t have to clutter your home screen; a handy “silence” switch; a 5MP camera; a button for quick access to wifi, GPS, Bluetooth, and power settings; and a plain ol’ micro USB port and headphone jack (hooray for no proprietary connectors!). The keyboard is smaller than the G1 so it’s not quite as easy to type with, but I have been getting better pretty quickly. I have been poking around and getting used to the Android OS as well and I am really liking it.

Famous on the internet

Well, sort of. Remember that awesome Tonberry cake from Chris and Christine’s wedding? Christine submitted it to Cake Wrecks for their “Sunday Sweets” feature using one of the pictures I took, and it ended up on Wired! So really it’s a second-hand fame, being that it’s their wedding cake and all, but I take what I can get.

Things I’m liking this week

The Bluray RW drive we got for the media center PC.

That Planet Replay has Bluray movies for $12 for aforementioned Bluray player.

This wireless PS2 controller by Logitech. My old corded ones were starting to act a little weird, and we just happened to see this one at Fry’s while browsing. It feels more like the 360 controllers which I find more comfortable than the old PS2 ones anyway. Plus: wireless is always better.

Scribblenauts.

The new-to-me boots I got off eBay for $40. THEY HAVE A DETACHABLE POCKET ON THE SIDE. Now I don’t have to carry a purse when I go dancing! Haven’t worn them around yet, but I suspect they will be easier on my legs than my existing boots (which always gave me blisters just below my shins because the leather was so stiff).

Dogfish Head Punk, a pumpkin beer which does not taste gross, and Terra Andina Carmenere, both of which deserve a post on the long-neglected Two Nerd Party.

The fact that there is a new Alice In Chains album.

Dragoncon 2009 rundown

Well, it’s time for the yearly Dragoncon rundown post! It’s much later than usual because I came down with some form of con crud this year despite my best efforts. I blame the AC and dry air in our hotel room for my massive head cold.

the internet is an enabler

Ok, so one of the big upsides of having a job again is being able to buy things. There are several things on the old Amazon wishlist that I’ve been wanting for a while, but I’m sure you know how the prices can fluctuate there. The best example was a set of all three seasons of Arrested Development, which would oscillate between $85 (around list price) and $45 (a damn good deal). While I like spending money, I also like getting deals. I looked around online a bit and found Camel Camel Camel. It’s a neat little site that lets you track prices on Amazon. You can bookmark a rss feed or you can sign up and have it email you when the price drops below a set point. It’s also got price charts for some items, so you can see how the price has changed over the past few months.

The only downside is that I’ve already ordered twice, and just got some more notifications this morning. Goodbye, monies.

Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Hoo, boy. First off, if you have heard me talk about comics before you’ll know that I am not fond of Wolverine. He’s basically the Superman of the Marvel universe: healing powers and heightened senses mean that he’s practically impossible to kill, and to top it off he’s a right asshole about it. I do however enjoy him in the movies, because, HELLO, it’s Hugh Jackman. That man is so charming and opposite what Wolverine is actually like (in looks AND personality) and enough of that leaks through into his performance to make the character likable. This plus Ryan Reynolds playing Deadpool and that Gambit was finally in an X-Men movie was enough to make me want to see it.

Here’s the short, no-spoiler version of my review: “The canon version of Wolverine’s origin is too boring…let’s change it around, add some characters who are either completely absent from the original story or are completely different from what they should be, and throw in as many slo-mo ‘walking away from an explosion’ or ‘screaming at the sky’ scenes as we can. Oh, and don’t forget the kicky one-liners.”

After that review, you might think that I didn’t like the movie. You would be mistaken! It is gloriously cheesy, and there are fights and things blow up. Hugh Jackman runs around naked. There are like eighteen different twists, and you can see all of them coming from a mile away. Gambit makes some cards glowy. Deadpool is awesome. There are even three different scenes after the credits, depending on where you see it! It’s absolutely lovely, as long as you don’t think too hard. Or at all, really.

Also: someone give Ryan Reynolds a Deadpool movie! You can just pretend that Origins didn’t happen when writing the script for it.

Let me know when it’s over

Dear Penny Arcade,

Why do you insist on doing those self-indulgent and masturbatory “cardboard tube samurai” comics? I suppose there must be some people that read and enjoy them, but the internet is full of idiots so I wouldn’t really take that as an endorsement.

Love,
Susi
